Laughter for Literacy

On Thursday, October 14, 2010 the National Post and Comedy Cares will host the second Laughter for Literacy fundraiser benefitting literacy programs in the Greater Toronto Area. All money raised from this exclusive event will go directly to the Raise-a-Reader Foundation. Not a single penny will go towards administrative costs. Along with the show, there will be a number of raffle items that will be available to be won.
The fantastic lineup of performers includes Canadian Comedy Award nominee Allyson Smith (Winnipeg Comedy Festival), Nile Seguin (The Hour), Vong Sundara (One Night Stand Up), and very special guest Sean Cullen (Just For Laughs).
Since its national launch in 2002, the Postmedia Raise-a-Reader campaign has raised $17 million for family literacy programs across Canada. Money raised goes to the family literacy programs, libraries and school libraries in the greatest need, throughout our city.
Here are a few good reasons why Raise-a-Reader needs your support:
-- More than three million Canadians have problems dealing with printed materials such as reading a map or understanding a prescription
-- More than 40% of Canadian adults have literacy skills below the level needed to succeed in today’s society and economy
-- According to the International Adult Literacy Survey, low literacy levels are linked to low employment levels and high crime rates
-- 100% of the money collected on Raise-a-Reader Day stays in our
community, helping fund many local family literacy programs. RAR has
previously supported the following organizations Frontier College, World
Literacy Canada and The Redwood
-- Postmedia and the National Post provide the time and resources to carry out the program so that every penny donated on Raise-a-Reader Day goes to our beneficiaries
